Resourcing Inclusive Communities (RIC), an initiative of Family Advocacy, provides information and resources to help people with disability to live meaningful lives, as valued members of their communities.
RIC asked me to produce a video on Jacob Hughes, a twenty-something from Newcastle, and his journey to live independently.
Jacob is non-verbal so his mother Linda and his support workers were crucial in helping to tell his story. Jacob’s many activities allowed plenty of options for B-roll, painting a picture of a life full of family, friends and purpose.
It was a pleasure to work with such wonderful people, not least Linda, whose vision made Jacob’s independence possible. His support workers were fantastic too. Their commitment to Jacob and his journey was self-evident. They were also completely natural in front of the camera, as well as endlessly accommodating of an annoying videographer (me).
As with all my most interesting projects, I felt I really learned something in producing this video. It was something quite profound (if, in retrospect, obvious): that people with disability should have access to the same opportunities as everyone else. And, with the right vision and support, they can lead full and rewarding lives within their communities.
