'Jac's Place'

Video

Resourcing Inclusive Communities (RIC), an initiative of Family Advocacy, provides information and resources to help people with disability to live meaningful lives, as valued members of their communities.

RIC asked me to produce a video on Jacob Hughes, a twenty-something from Newcastle, and his journey to live independently.

Jacob is non-verbal so his mother Linda and his support workers were crucial in helping to tell his story. Jacob’s many activities allowed plenty of options for B-roll, painting a picture of a life full of family, friends and purpose.

It was a pleasure to work with such wonderful people, not least Linda, whose vision made Jacob’s independence possible. His support workers were fantastic too. Their commitment to Jacob and his journey was self-evident. They were also completely natural in front of the camera, as well as endlessly accommodating of an annoying videographer (me).

As with all my most interesting projects, I felt I really learned something in producing this video. It was something quite profound (if, in retrospect, obvious): that people with disability should have access to the same opportunities as everyone else. And, with the right vision and support, they can lead full and rewarding lives within their communities.

"Tom was recommended to me by a colleague who had worked with him before. A look at his website confirmed for me that he could tell complex stories with beautiful film making. Tom was so easy to work with and completely ready to listen and understand the life that he was engaged to portray. We are an organisation working with people with disability and their families, so Tom’s flexibility and sensitivity was appreciated in working around the needs of the people in the film. Another advantage is that Tom is multi-skilled and was able to direct, film, edit and source the music for the film himself. In previous film projects we have had to use multiple people to perform these different tasks and the costs involved were much greater. So Tom is a real find because we are delighted with the film and the quality of the cinematography and storytelling. There are beautiful moments and close-ups between people that only an experienced and gifted film-maker can give you. Our organisation would certainly work with Tom again as our preferred collaborator."
